Bard Elevates Her Game Against Former Coach

Sydney Bard scored her first career PWHL goal this weekend for the Boston Fleet. It was made even more special by the fact she scored the goal against her NCAA coach Greg Fargo, and his New York Sirens.

PWHL Boston Fleet’s Sydney Bard scored her first PWHL game on Sunday afternoon against the New York Sirens.

Bard’s goal was a special moment for her, not only did she score on home ice, but when she looked at the opposing bench after her goal, she saw her former coach looking on.

Bard played five years at Colgate University under Greg Fargo before she began playing in the PWHL. Similarly, Greg Fargo coached at Colgate University for twelve seasons before accepting the Head Coaching position with the New York Sirens this year.

The two entered the league at the same time, and faced one another for the first time on Sunday afternoon.

Bard, who has played three games in the PWHL, put the puck past Sirens’ Corinne Schroeder in the last minute of the first period for her first PWHL goal.

Greg Fargo, who had coached the Sirens to a hot start looked on from the bench as his former player scored against his current team.

When asked about how Bard felt scoring against her former coach, she said, “honestly [I] didn’t think about that. Credit to Fargo, he is such an amazing coach.”

Bard has been off to a good start with the Fleet. Support from her teammates has helped her on-ice performance.

Fleet Assistant Captain Megan Keller was excited for Bard’s first PWHL goal. “She’s always there to support me when I mess up. It’s been awesome to see her go, and she deserved that goal today. I’m happy that she got that one, and she’s gonna keep shooting” said Keller.

The five-foot-three defender has entered the league with confidence.

“I know I’m not that big, but I can use my body to my advantage and get some good skin on skin.” Bard continued, “because I’m a little quick, I can kind of use that to my advantage. But mostly just having the confidence to go out there and take hits or give them”.

Her performance on Sunday was Bard’s best this season. She credited it to having Fargo there, “just him in the building, obviously, I wanted to step up my game for him. He’s been a huge supporter of me, just in my career, and even now, just being on opposing teams, he’s been a huge part of my success, and my journey. I didn’t think about it, but it feels pretty good.”
